"High Performance Position Sensor is the Smallest Size Sensor on the Market"

Burlington, Vermont, March 10, 2002 - MicroStrain, Inc. a leading designer and manufacturer of micro sensors, today announced the introduction of its new Microminiature gauging DVRT, a tiny position sensor with captive spring and guided core. These linear position sensors are available in 1.5, 3, and 6mm full-scale (FS) stroke lengths. The device combines high performance in a microminiature package.

Standard resolution is 1.5 microns, linearity +/- .75% of FS, bandwidth 800 Hz. High-resolution microminiature gauging DVRT's are available as custom units, these can resolve 0.5 microns at 800 Hz bandwidth. The sensors are fully submergible, and 3 mm stroke lengths are available from stock.

"This is ideal for critical linear displacement measurements - the Microminiature DVRT delivers tremendous performance in the smallest package. Advancements in MicroStrain's product development, material improvements and the never ending miniaturization of electronics have resulted in a rugged, fast and sensitive instrument," said Steve Arms, President of MicroStrain. "The applications range from valve position measurement to hydraulic controls and we believe that its submersion capabilities in aqueous environments are a powerful benefit."

MicroStrain has developed patented temperature compensation electronics that use the DVRT's coils to sense both thermal gradients and the overall temperature of the sensor, and its circuits employ these signals as feedback to minimize thermally induced offset and span errors. The standard temperature coefficients are .002%/degree C on the offset and .03%/degree C on the span. Typically, these thermal errors are reduced by at least a factor of 5 by using proprietary temperature compensation electronics. Micro-gauging DVRT's are provided in submergible, all stainless steel, 8-32 threaded packaging. Each sensor comes with an 18" cable. The cable is Teflon insulated, shielded, and contains three separately insulated conductors. Each conductor is a rope of wire, reinforced with a center strand of stainless steel wire.

"We love the reliability, size and superior sensitivity of this product. We think the applications are unlimited" said Arms.
