Throughout the bridge-building industry, the fact that many of the nation's bridges are in need of major repairs or
rehabilitation has been well-publicized. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that 27.2 percent of the
nation's bridges are "structurally deficient or functionally obsolete." Many of these structures simply have aged
prematurely because of unforeseen traffic loads, leaving state and local authorities (as well as the federal government)
with an expensive maintenance and repair challenge.
