Wireless Sensors Measure Vehicle Acceleration in The Discovery Channel’s First Episode
of Smash Lab
MicroStrain installed wireless accelerometers
into vehicles that were used to test the effectiveness of crash barriers made from
aerated concrete during the first episode of The Discovery Channel’s Smash Lab.
The accelerometers were used to measure the deceleration of vehicles when crashed
into other vehicles, standard crash barriers and barriers made with aerated concrete.
The premise of this episode was to determine whether the aerated concrete used at
the end of airport runways in “arrestor beds” to stop aircraft that overshoot a
runway can be used to slow down vehicles that cross the median of a highway.
