Wireless sensing reduces structural testing costs by eliminating cabling. This paper presents
a fully integrated, miniaturized, scaleable, wireless strain measurement system. Each strain
node includes: 2 MB memory; 802.15.4 DSSS transceiver; multi-channel strain gauge electronics
with wireless offset, gain, and shunt calibration. Peak-valley data compression and rain flow
fatigue calculations are embedded. With sixteen RF/USB inputs, each base station supports
1600 wireless tri-axial strain rosettes (4,800 individual strain gauges), updating at 5Hz.
Data rates of 1700 Hz are also supported. At 5 Hz, power management reduces average node
current to 150 microamperes at +3 VDC, allowing one AA battery to operate for ~ 1.5 years.
