An inertial measurement unit (IMU) is an electronic device that measures and reports force, angular rate and sometimes the magnetic field surrounding a sensor/body. Using a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes, IMUs are typically used for real-time vehicle stability and terrain compensation, and allows a GPS receiver to work in GPS-denied environments.
